Toronto Immigration Law Firm Hires New Refugee And Immigration Lawyer
Michael Battista and Adrienne Smith of the Battista Smith Migration Law Group are pleased to introduce the newest member of their firm. Rebeka Lauks has joined the Toronto immigration law firm as an Associate Lawyer. Rebeka’s practice focuses on representing clients before the Immigration and Refugee Board and Federal Court, as well as family sponsorship, economic, and humanitarian and compassionate applications. Rebeka also has expertise in complex inadmissibility issues, including criminal inadmissibility. Prior to joining Battista Smith, Rebeka worked for an internationally known immigration firm in Toronto and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Rebeka has also worked at a boutique litigation firm focused on mental health, disability, education, human rights, and the Canadian Charter of Rights law. Committed to community service, Rebeka volunteers with CLEO’s Steps to Justice program and Pro Bono Ontario. Rebeka also teaches an online course in Refugee Law with the University of British Columbia. Rebeka has a law degree (J.D.) from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University. During law school, Rebeka spent a semester as a caseworker with the immigration and refugee law division of the University of Toronto’s Downtown Legal Services clinic. She was also awarded a Donner Civic Leadership Fund fellowship, through which she spent a summer working at the Human Rights Legal Support Centre.
Rebeka holds membership in the Refugee Lawyers Association, the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers, and the Canadian Bar Association.

Adrienne Smith explained, “We knew from the beginning that Rebeka was a great fit for us, given her strong experience in client service and advocacy. She will help us in shaping Canadian immigration law in Parliament and in Canadian courts, as we have done in the past. During the creation of Canada’s current immigration legislation from 1999-2001, we appeared in the House of Commons and Senate to address the reformulation of the family class to include same-sex families. We have appeared before Parliamentary standing committees on human rights issues and most recently provided testimony on eliminating health grounds as a basis of inadmissibility – a position which the Parliamentary committee adopted. We have been consistent advocates in the Federal Court and before immigration tribunals a fair application of immigration law and policy.”
