Clean ecology as one of the Norilsk Nickel’s main goals
Norilsk Nickel has officially declared clean ecology as one of its main goals. In particular, now the company is implementing several projects at once aimed at improving the ecological situation.
Clean ecology as priority: Norilsk Nickel presented the Sulphur project
The Sulphur project is the key draft Norilsk Nickel has been working on for a long time. The main aim of it is to sufficiently reduce the level of sulphur dioxide emissions in the regions of Nornickel’s operations. Norilsk Nickel protects the ecology by taking care of the atmosphere.
The first phase of the Sulphur project has already been finished and it has resulted in:
• the reduction of SO2 emissions by 30% in the Norilsk residential area and by 15% in the Polar Division
• Nadezhda Plant and Talnakh concentrator upgrade and expansion
• elimination of 600 sources of air pollution
• shut down of two wastewater discharge points
Norilsk Nickel plans to continue working on this draft and it is estimated that it can cost about $3.5BN. Nornickel is ready to cover all the expenses related as it is vital to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions locally and globally.
How Great Norilsk expedition will help to save Arctic ecology
The second project that also plays a huge role in the Norilsk ecology is the great Norilsk expedition that has been organized by Norilsk Nickel in cooperation with outstanding scientists from 14 RAS institutes.
The first stage that was carried out on the field finished and it helped to examine the Taimyr Peninsula.
During this stage, more than 1500 samples of plants, water, sediment and soil were collected and placed in the laboratories. It is expected that the laboratory stage will take several months and result in an important report that will provide:
• the information about changes that have happened in the Arctic region recently
• the data about the present ecological situation suggestions for industrial companies on how to continue sustainable development without bringing any harm to the environment
This project is really important for the Arctic region and it is unique in its nature.
Global ecology is also important for Norilsk Nickel
Norilsk Nickel protects the ecology on the global level as well. It has joined forces with a huge European corporation, BASF, and these giants plan to implement a project devoted to reducing a carbon footprint. It will help to supply the battery materials markets and lead to the improvement of the current ecological situation in the world.
As it has been announced the first location will be in Harjavalta, Finland and the new plant there will utilize locally generated renewable energy sources. This is a long-term initiative that will contribute to the development of two industrial giants as well as have a great impact on solving global environmental issues.
